LUCKY ROOSTER YEAR  Cultural Visual Research-The Chinese Zodiac & Five Elements

The Chinese Zodiac is consists of a cycle of 12 years, with each year being represented by an animal and its reputed attributes. Another element of Chinese traditional culture is Five Elements Theory, which is a philosophy used to describe interactions and relationships between things. The five elements-wood, fire, earth, metal, and water are believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe between which interaction occurs. For instance, the directions, colors, taste, sensory organs, etc. are explained in terms of this theory. One of the five elements is associated with each of the Chinese zodiac sign.
According to this system, 2017 was a Fire year by the element cycle, and a Rooster year by the Zodiac system. That is, the Rooster is associated with the Fire Element.

A thired Chinese belief system is Feng Shui, literally, "wind- water". Chinese people believe following good Feng Shui practices, in combination with acknowledging the Zodiac and the Five Elements will bring good luck. Accordingly, people decorate their home base on the Fengshui theory. For example, in 2017 Chinese brought Rooster posters to hang on the inside walls of their homes, and some people placed sculptures of roosters outside the front door of their home. Some people even changed the main screen of their cell- phone to a display of an image of a rooster.
